Quilt vs. Comforter vs. Coverlet: What's the Difference?

Shopping for new bedding? These three words get mixed up a lot. Here is how they differ.

Quilt

A quilt has three layers: a decorative top, a thin batting in the middle, and a backing, all stitched together. Patchwork quilts are sewn from many pieces of fabric. Quilts are light, breathable and great for layering in any season.

Comforter

A comforter is thick and fluffy, filled with down or polyester fill. It is the warmest option and is often sold as a bed-in-a-bag set with shams and sheets.

Coverlet and bedspread

A coverlet is a thin, lightweight top layer. It usually covers the top of the mattress without reaching the floor. A bedspread is longer and drapes to the floor. Both are often quilted, so the words overlap.

Which should you choose?

  • Warm sleeper or warm climate: a quilt or coverlet.
  • Cold bedroom: a comforter, or a quilt layered over a blanket.
  • Want a finished, made-bed look: a quilt set with matching shams.
