How to Wash a Quilt Without Ruining It

A good quilt can last for years. But only if you wash it the right way. Here is a simple guide.

1. Check the tag first. Look for the care label. If it says dry clean only, do not wash it at home.

2. Wash less often. A quilt sits on top of your sheets. Washing it a few times a year is usually enough. Shake it out or air it in the sun between washes.

3. Use a gentle cycle. Cold water. Mild soap. No bleach. Bleach can fade colors and weaken the thread.

4. Give it room. Use a large washer. Wash the quilt alone. A packed machine pulls and tears stitching.

5. Dry with care. Low heat, or lay it flat. High heat can shrink fabric. Add clean dryer balls to keep the filling fluffy. Make sure it is fully dry. Damp quilts can grow mildew.

6. Store it well. Use a cotton bag or a clean sheet. Skip plastic. Fabric needs to breathe.

Quick tips: fix loose threads first. Test a small spot if colors look bold. Use a laundromat for big, thick quilts.
